A miraculous recovery

Submitted by FM_Eric_Schiller on Mon, 06/16/2008 at 2:39pm.

Like most chessplayers, sometimes I screw up badly in the opening. In the game that follows, I was playing at the NY Open in front of my friends and colleagues, and was embarrassed to fall into a simpe opening trap. I was too shocked to resign, so I just kept playing, and somehow managed to equalize after some major sacrifices, and eventually even won the game.

The game is included in my Development of a Chess MAster, where I show many of my stupidest and most instuctive mistakes and then a few wins over GMS, proving that no matter how badly you play on some occasions, on others it is still possible to play well.

The lesson is to never give up even if you made a bad mistake. You have an opponent there, and he can make mistakes too.

Greg it is illegal I am in check.

CaptainZero forgive my Americanism. I should have used "one" instead of "you" but I am looking out over the Pacific not the Thames.

Captain Zorg, it is nice to know that you can play your way out of a mess. But better not to get into the mess!

I see you  are an island-dweller but if you are in London next month drop by Simpson's and check out Nigel Short in the Staunton Memorial and see if octogenarian Bob Wade can hold his own in a GM tournament!

Sorry, cpatainzorg, but ...Bd6 is illegal as the bishop is pinned. So is castling, as the bishop at h6 covers f8.

Once one of my opponents fell in a trap alike as the one in your game but I made a blunder and my opponent almost beat me. We drew.

I liked the commentary than the game.

Queen hungry, tasty snacks etc.

A good one - from worst to bad to better to the best.

A good lesson to remember, not to give up!

Perhaps I have lots of faith in myself, or maybe I'm a glutton for punishment, but I never resign... I always make my opponent get to checkmate to win.  I just scraped away with a draw due to stalemate in a game I played really well, but (should have) lost right at the end.  Sometimes it IS better to be lucky than good!

What a come back.  Well played and it was an interesting opening but the fact is that white brought his queen out early to clean off your pieces much to the fact that it is sometimes troubling.

One must remember the aim of the game, checkmate.  People sometimes get very greedy and lose the aim of it.  You opponent made some amateurish blunders and you were very lucky.

That was a good one Eric, your opponent had you on the ropes alright, but it seems like something about you intimidated him, maybe your reputation. But that was a close call. I like those games were the losing opponent turns the tables around, I have been able to pull off a few of those stunts myself. Instructive posting.
