A Spark of Genius

Submitted by kenytiger on Tue, 04/15/2008 at 10:27am.

Here is a good miniature from the late 1800's that shows an amazing display of chess mastery. New York State Champion Julius Finn defeats his opponent in a beautiful way. In the final position, White offers his Rook in exchange for the Black King. Black can capture the Rook with either Bishop, Queen or Knight, but the gruesome fate of his King cannot be stopped.

Actually, if black plays Ne5, then Rxe5, Re8, Rxe8, Qxe8, and then Qd5+ and black still lost...

what about 17...Ne5 giving the secrifice back to gain another turn, if white takes the queen then the knight can take the queen with check and then play Bd6 to trap the rook and he is leading...

if white takes the knight then Re8 can be played...

Taxman, if black takes with the Queen, White plays Qd5+, and black is still very much screwed.

Move 12 was probably good intuition. Maybe he didn't plan it out, but he knew something was there. Still I'd never see it myself.

fabulous sequence. As the match progressed, it still appeared the King was in safe keeping. That was a great win!

Man, all black has to do is play 9. ... g6, and it looks like his position is equal.

My computer has a defense for Black where he returns the sacrificed minor piece with    14... Qd5  15. Nxe6 Rc8 (stops the Knight fork on c7) 16 fxg7 Bxg7 and Black's position holds.

kenytiger, thanx again for sharing this game. Very instructive in many ways but greater with the knight sacrifice and offering the rook, also I agree with taking the knight with rook, anyway black is lost.

After Ne5 to avoid mate the strongest move is simply taking knight with the rook , keeping the queen on board.

Think about why he resigned.  Is it because he couldn't avoid a checkmate or because he can't win or draw?

Or after 17...Ne5, 18.Rxd7  Nxf3+  19.Nxf3, which also wins a piece. I'm willing to bet Black saw Ne5 but realized it was hopeless.

ih8sens is right. I can't see a mate after 17...Ne5. however, white can simply play 18 Rxe5 and he is up a piece and theoretically should win.

Not to ruin everything but 17. ... Ne5 saves mate.
