An Immortal Brilliancy

Edward Lasker (1885-1981) was an engineer and an author. He was awarded the title of International Master, even when his play was of Grandmaster strenght. He was five times US Open Champion (1916, 1917, 1919, 1920 and 1921). Many believe he was a distant relative of World Champion Emanuel Lasker. The game below is his immortal blitz masterpiece against Sir George Thomas, in which he announced Mate in eight. The game features a nice Queen sacrifice and one of the prettiest forced King marches over the board, it makes you wonder if White should have castled with Mate.

My friend from chess club showed me this game earlier today.  I'm glad he did.

    It's quite impressive!

The last 8 moves of this game were covered in a Chess Mentor lesson. (Chess.com lists this game as London, 1911, while Chessgames.com says London, 1912.) Lasker could have reduced this to mate in 7, rather than 8, in two different ways which would have required less material to mate. Also, the last move could have been 0-0-0#. I have seen a couple of Morphy games where he ends with 0-0#. I'm regurgitating what I learned from Chess Mentor for those who may not have come across this Lasker brilliancy before. Edward Lasker could be brilliant at times, but his overall record against strong players was not outstanding. I base this statement on information from Wikipedia.

This display convinces me that apart from the fact that chess is a brilliant game with endless combinations, it has some tinge of being an exact science!
