Attacking on the e-file

Submitted by likesforests on Sun, 11/04/2007 at 5:10pm.

Sometimes your opponent doesn't castle. How do you take advantage? A typical plan is to attack on the e-file, and these are some wonderful annotated examples.

We can't all attack like Steinitz, but if we're aware of the possibilities we can score a win like Jay or SamuraiPawn... or at least avoid being their next victims! Smile

tib_jmk, the queen is defended by the bishop on a6, so the king cannot capture the queen... it's checkmate.

22. ... Kxe7 23. Re1+ Kd8 24. Ne6+ Ke8 25. Nc5+ Qe7 26. Rxe7+ Kxe7 27. Qe6+ Kf8 28. Nd7+ etc.

22. ... Kxe7 23. Re1+ Kd6 24. Qb4+ Kc7 25. Rc1+ Kb8 26. Qf4+ Rc7 27. Ne6 and there's too many attackers of c7 for black to deal with.

nope. only a piece.

Good catch... I updated the diagram. I only scratched the surface on this game to illustrate attacking along the e-file, but I should point out that Goldsby has written some excellent annotations on Steinitz vs Von Bardeleben.

The first step is knowing to look for them. When your e-file brilliancy comes... every dog (owner!) has his day... let me know and I'll be sure to add it.

Those are murderous attacks, I wish I could execute them.
