CHESS.com strategy

Submitted by NM Michelangelooo on Thu, 09/04/2008 at 8:02am.

I´m not so long playing on CHESS.com. In my games I noticed that some players are slowing down when they are worse or losing. At first it didn´t make any sense to me. You are going to lose this game anyway, so why slow down?

And then I saw the idea behind it. It has to do with that number on your screen: highest rating.

When you slow down the games you are going to lose you can make an new highest rating. After you reached that, you resign all you losing games. You rating goes down a lot and it starts all over again.

I hope that more you understand now why some people continue playing in a dead-lost position. I saw a lot of complains about this.

Good luck with your games!

I don't think that has anything to do with it. It's just that in a losing position, you won't feel as enthusiastic about playing. People slow down when they're losing. It's a general rule: If you are winning, you'll feel like pounding your opponent into the dirt, thus forcing the game to continue at a fast pace; If you're losing, you'll want to delay it for a while, and hope your opponent times-out. Not to mention you won't feel like playing anyway... :)

remember. Chess is a battle. when to sides go out to battle and one side starts to lose, what happens? They usually retreat. This is what happens when you start to win your chess game. The player retreats, demoralised, wounded and with an attitude of defeat. They then have a rest of body and mind, dust themselves off, tell themselves to go out there an kick battle weary over confident but.

have 100 games up and running and you wont worry about peoples little tricks because they will fizle out into insignificance. does this make sense. it hardley does to me too.

This is not the only place this is happening. I'm also playing on another site (where there is no rating), and my opponent who is 3 pieces down is stretching the game to the full month's worth of his move turn. Positively annoying, since I only get to play a limit of 16 games because I'm not a premium member.

You guys are lucky. I don't get a chance to draw a game out. They don't last long enough! I'm a beginner so I am still getting thrashed. Sometimes though I will play to the bitter end just to see if I can turn the game around. I have no idea what my rating is though it's probably three figures.

I agree with you. I think it's really bad for a chess player to play like this. But some of those chess players are so determined to win that forgot the value of the game( pleasure). The only thing they want is a higher rating.Never mind . Keep walking and play without stress about your rating.Wink

dont complain.  you agree to those rules... and your opponent is just taking his time which is perfectly within the rules of the game.  Besides, a rating does not reflect the true ability and strength of a player.

If you agree to playing a game to a move/3 days, what are you complaining about when your opponent takes the 3 days?

If you don't like waiting, play blitz. For the record, I rarely play on here (use the Facebook chess.com app insted) and I have an opponent in a very inferior position taking the whole 9 days before each move. I agreed to these terms, so no use complaining now.

Make sure you understand the terms of your games (or any other deal in life), so you don't come to whine later. It is unsportsmanlike to b!tch when your opponent is only using as much of his time as allocated by the terms of engagement ;)

The tournament situation is pretty annoying, though. Maybe there needs to be a specific set of rules to make them roll more fluidly (i.e. allocating them by software analysis after x amount of days, to prevent stalling the whole board). Or maybe even defaulting. Heck, I played in a lot of RL tournaments where my opponent was late/sick/didn't feel like showing up.

Maybe they are taking so long because they are doing something really absurd. I believe it is called thinking. You do this to try and find a variation your opponet doesn't know. Their is ALWAYS a chance for a win and if not, a draw.

I'll tell you some good advice, and I think this goes the whole way around...if you are going to win, you will win no matter how long it takes.  And if they lose because of time, that is a win for you also.  If it takes a year, you will still win.  The good thing to do is to use the "notes" caption to record the winning move order - that way, once the game occurs, you can go back to your notes to refresh your memory.  And if they play something different, you're still going to win! :-)

But the next step to this piece of advice (that someone else brought up) - start a new game with someone else.  You get good opportunities to meet new people this way.  And then your delayed game won't be such a bother.  I have close to 50 games going right now, and if someone takes a while to move, I don't even hardly notice - most people play pretty quick.

I think we must always uphold the spirit of sportsmanship to maintain good relationship among chessplayers! In the end what matters is the relationship we build with one another! Just enjoy the beauty and excitement of playing chess! Don't care much about rating! In this kind of set up it will not reflect your true strenght! Maybe your opponent is consulting with rybka, fritz, etc. So just enjoy playing!

I think if your in a tournament you should play the game, not stall because your going to lose. But, if you think you still have a chance go for it.

I agree with jonnyjupiter I'm in a game now and the guy is on vacation for the last week or more. He only has a couple of trapped pawns and no pieces.

Cheskatejero, no one is saying anything about rules. I am sure everyone knows them.  It is about sportsmanship. Do you know what that means? If not, please look it up.
You just find excuses for being a poor sport, and frankly I am tired of listening to all the BS and ignorant and faulty reasoning.
