Counting your moves

Submitted by Logicalfan10 on Mon, 11/12/2007 at 11:54pm.

This might sound weird, but counting moves (almost) made me lose the game. This is a game that I played, when counting moves is very important.

I may have won in the end (king vs king and pawn) but in a different situation it was cost you the game.

Two pawns, separated by a file, hold themselves permanently until the king can come and assist them.  You were right to trade rook for queen, but your king should have gone right over and ate the other pawn.  The wrong idea is to push one pawn up the board on it's own.  You keep them on the same rank.  If he attacks the right pawn, you push the left (making the right pawn outside the square and therefore poisoned) and vice versa.  He can't pick up either pawn and trying only lets you push them closer to queening.  If you get both to the 6th, they force a queen even without your king.  He can't deal w/ your pawns and still keep his.  You won.

My variation runs 1. QxR KxQ   2. Ke2 Kc4   3. Kd2 Kd5  4. Kc3 Ke4  5. g4 Ke5 (he can't take because then my g pawn queens) 6. Kb4 Kf6  7. e4 Kg5  8. e5 Kg6  9. Kb5 Kf7  10. g5 Kf8  11. Kxb6 Kf7 and my king comes over to make a queen.

if anything i would have pushed the e pawn one and let him take, the drove my passed protected pawns down his throatwhile your king kept an eye on his passed pawn

I actually thought that trading off the rook for my queen would make the game more interesting.

To be safe, don't give away queen for rook in such a situation!  Even if you counted correctly, it's much easier and faster to keep the queen on the board and use it to support your pawns /stop his pawn/ etc.

Actually the black king can reach the g pawn and kill it if black follows c6, d7, e7, f7.
