deadly trap in damianos defence

Submitted by chrisjuddisgreat on Thu, 01/08/2009 at 2:46am.

hi folks. i came upon this combo whilst looking at a page of tips and traps. on move three the white knight takes a pawn, tempting black to capture. black consents to the capture and losses instantly. a lovely combo that i had the pleasure of using on an unsuspecting foe.

Google "Sam Sloan" Damiano to find lots of discussion on his pet line.

I had the pleasure of using this trap just yesterday! One question though...if black were to play 14...Be6 (instead of Kg6), would this stop the checkmate and keep black in the game?

The correct move I think in the Damiano Defence after 2.Nxe5 is 2...Qe7

As I further analyzed the game, I found that Black may as well gambit a pawn with 2...d6!? which avoids this trouble.

This is labeled as Deep Fritz 8 as a gambit, as the compensation for the sacrificed knight is two pawns and a strong initiative against the king (3...g6?? 4.Qxe5+ followed by 5.Qxh8 avoids a misplaced king but costs a rook and two pawns for a knight).
