Defeating the Sicilian the Quiet Way

Submitted by Patzer24 on Mon, 05/25/2009 at 10:48pm.

Here is a game from the 3rd ACP World Rapid Cup, GM Movsesian - GM Tregubov with full annotations and commentary:

I believe this is a very instructive game which can change the mind set of playing against the Sicilian Defense. Many players think that the only way to beat the Sicilian is to fight fire against fire and play for an all out aggressive game. However, this is not true as we have seen here with this game. In this case white chose to play a nice positional game and waited for the right moment to play for a breakthrough which did come quick and decisively!

The commentary on inappropriate trades (e.g. while on the attack, etc.) was very instructive.

I love the annotation at 19 -- "and now we see why white made the move at 14."  Awesome to see something come back 5 moves deeper as sincerely as that.

I love the way the game unfolded so neatly from a quiet drawish game into a position of advantage for white.

The Sicilian Defense and its many variations remains one of Black's best defense vehicles ever!  All this game proves is that this opening can provide a wide range of tactical and strategic avenues for good, strong, and exciting play!  But any variation of the Sicilian usually leads to an interesting game!  Trying to "positionalize" it really won't work - in this player's opinion!

29. Nf5 doesn't work because black has perpetual check.

29. Nf5 Qc1+ 30. Kh2 Qf4+ 31. Ng3  (g3 is terrible) and it gets messier.  White is still up but not best.
