Fridrik Olafsson

Submitted by billwall on Sat, 05/17/2008 at 2:25pm.

Fridrik Olafsson was born in Reykjavik in 1935.   In 1952, at the age of 17, he was Icelandic Champion.  In 1953, he took 3rd place in the World Junior Championship.  He was Iceland's first Grandmaster (1958) and the fourth FIDE president (1978-82).  He is the Secretary General of the Icelandic Parliament.  In 1955 he arrived late to participate in the annual Hastings tournament in England.  No rooms could be found for him so he spent his first night in a cell at the Hastings police station as a guest to the local police.  His FIDE rating is 2452.  His highest FIDE rating was 2570.

In this game, he takes on Grandmaster Miguel Quinteros and finds a neat trap in the Sicilian Defense.  With a few sacrifices, he can force checkmate.  Quinteros resigned instead.
