Are you all ready for the treasure hunt? So here we go! First, a terrific position from London-Edinburgh Match 1824.Imagine that you are a member of the Edinburgh team. In the following position both your queen and the bishop are under attack. What is more, the king is under dire threats. How can you help your team to overcome the disater?
Was that tough? Not bad, if you just saw the first move for Black and the next move for White.
The second game was played between Moscow and Riga chess clubs. Moscow was led by Alexander Alekhine and Ossip Bernstein and Riga by the talented Betins brothers.* Imagine that you belong to Riga club. Your team has boldly offered a rook on h2.But your opponents have refused to accept the bait. So what are you going to do?
That was quite a game!Beating Alekhine with his own weapons is an experience in itself. For the third game you are with Dr.János Balogh, an unorthodox player and a brilliant tactician from Hungary. He beat Paul Keres himself in a game that is still remembered for the sheer verve with which he conducted the attack. In the following position the doctor has a little problem. His opponent has refused to accept the gift horse and in stead sought to end the siege with a move like...Rxc6. So what do you think he should do?
How was it? From such games one learns the art of aggression.
In the concluding part of the review we shall see how other great masters play:
