Interesting Puzzle

Submitted by gmatt on Wed, 10/10/2007 at 5:09pm.

Hi there,

I'm a new member, just joined today (Oct. 10th 2007) and I thought that I would submit a fun puzzle I came across in Polgar's massive book of puzzles. I won't say any more about the puzzle because as soon as I give one hint I will give it all away and it will be far less satisfying if you get it.

Enjoy! (I actually didn't get this puzzle at first but it made such an impression on me I decided to share it.)

Hey Raif,

Qg6 is as ineffective as Qg5. The reason why its forced mate is because after 2. ... Qg6 3. d8=N# that is white promotes to a knight instead of a queen.

Lovely puzzle. I tried checking with the white queen along the long white diagonal a8-h1 thinking the first move just had to be a check. But none of the queen checks worked because of black queen checks on a3 and a2. And if 1) Q-e4+, Qxe4 2) d7, Qxd4+. Queen h5 draws the black queen away to the only square it can't do any damage.

Is it okay to do dy first, and then after whatever black does you take the knight? I suppose it's sorta the same number of moves since you mate with Qe4. Nice puzzle!

Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I have. I've tried to incorporate both the queen and bishop promotion in the puzzle, but I can't seem to get it to work, I've changed it to the queen since thats the one that is more likely to be picked by the average human player.

That was really good, but I tried promoting to a queen the first time (silly me...) before realising that a bishop is sufficiant.
