Interesting snippet

Submitted by mathijs on Sun, 12/28/2008 at 6:42pm.

Earlier this night I was feeling lazy and decided to follow some games in livechess. Watching one game, I thought I saw a trick that the players overlooked. I was wrong, but with a slight alteration the trick would have worked and in fact be a lot more interesting than I first thought. The actual finish of the game was quite dramatic and eventful, so I'll share that with you as well.

(see the move list for variations.)

I'm sorry, Arjunrama, I forgot to mention 2...Nxd8 3.Qe8#. Similar mates are in the side variations, but it should be mentioned in the main line too.

Crux, thanks for taking up my cause. A word of worning though, in your line 5...Qc6+ 6.Qg7!?? (sort of #) Qxg2!??, not just 6.Qg7 is an illegal move, but also 6...Qxg2. I'm sure you knew that, but I thought it worth mentioning, because in over the board play, in normal time controls the position before the first illegal (i.e. after 5...Qc6+) would be reinstated, but in blitz you can claim the game after your opponent makes an illegal move, before you make one. Thus, in Blitz in the above scenario, after 6.Qg7, black could claim the game, but waves his rights by making a move. That move is illegal (capturing a king is illegal), so now white can claim the game. A friend of mine used that very sleazy trick to save some utterly lost games in a blitz tournament.

Glue, if it were legal, that would be mate, but 5...Qc6+ is check. It is because of that that it appears at first sight to be an adequate defence to the mate threat.

Cool, you should have posted this as a puzzle in the "more puzzles" section.
