Judit, Alexei, and the Monkey's Bum

Submitted by Duffer1965 on Thu, 04/09/2009 at 10:11am.

I ran across this well-known game while looking into the Modern Defense. Judit Polgar, then 19, defeated Alexei Shirov, then 23, at the 1995 Donner Memorial in Amsterdam. Shirov tried the Modern Defense, and Polgar responded with the Monkey's Bum Deferred. (The Monkey's Bum proper starts 1 e4 g6  2 Bc4 Bg7 3 Qf3.)

Enjoy.

He resigned, i think because he cant stop white playing Qd6+ except by playing Ke8, in mwhich case white plays Bc6+(discovered) which wins the Rook on a8 for free. White has only to castle and its rook is quickly brought into play with the King at the mercy of Queen ,Rook, Knight and both bishops. White may not even need to castle- i   haven't had time to check.

Great game, not "well-known" by me, thank you for posting it. I wish it had notes explaining some of the moves.
