Keep Your Eyes on Maxime!

Submitted by RobertABrown on Sat, 08/25/2007 at 6:32pm.

When it comes to up and coming youngsters most of the buzz is about Magnus Carlsen or Sergei Karjakin or the amazing 12 year old Chinese girl, Hou Yifan, but what about the French phenom, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave? The French teen has just won the Championship of France in Aix-Des-Bains after convincingly beating last year's champ, Vladislav Tkachiev (2655) in a tie-breaking rapid rate playoff, making him the youngest French champion ever at the tender age of sixteen and a half.

Nobody will accuse Maxime of dull chess. He made one short draw in the closing rounds of this year's championship, but in the other games his gaze was firmly fixed upon his opponents' jugulars. The following tussle with Robert Fontaine in the penultimate round typifies chess a la Lagrave.

Great game to post, interesting character to put the spotlight on. I enjoyed playing through this. Your annotation, varations, and writting made it a wee treat.

Im a beginner so please excuse me if this is a stupid question- but why not 12... pawn take knight, then if white tries to salvage 1 bishop black takes the other.

Sorry, Invisible! This was my first attempt.  I wasn't aware that one could animate  variations. I'll endeavour to find out before I write another.

Very nice game, thanks for showing it! However, maybe making your variations playable could make it easier!
