Nakamura's hard-to-catch King

Submitted by orejano on Mon, 03/24/2008 at 1:16pm.

Here is one amazing game played by Hikaru Nakamura. He managed to move his King in the middlegame all the way to h7 and the black pieces can't catch him!.

If there's one thing that's predictable about Nakamura, it's his unpredictability! That's just one of several reasons why he is a successful chess player. I play "guess the move" from the first move to the last sometimes on grandmaster games, & so far I have had a tougher time trying to predict his moves than any other player (or darn close to it). Another strength of his is his nerves of steel. I noticed this when I saw him play in a tournament in Denver in '03. I don't think he ever looked nervous. This game illustrates an underrated part of his game, his defensive ability. People normally just think of him as being an aggressive attacker, but this proves he is skilled @ fending off attacks as well. This game also shows his courage & confidence. This is one heck of a game!

MyNameIsLuke - Your suggestion does not lead to a sure draw. white would take the rook with the queen... two bishops and a rook are MUCH more powerful than a queen. Black is in a dire situation if he chooses that line.

Wow, interesting. And black is indeed lost in the end. I would never have the guts to go into that in a real game.

That's a nice move MyNameIsLuke, but maybe white can afford to play 41... Rg6 22. Qxg6 Bxg6+ 23. Bxg6 when 24. Rf7 and 25. Rxc7 is still very bad for black.
