Patzer's Corner #3

Hello fellow patzers!

I've decided to bring to you interesting part of chess history. As you probably know, later this year there is a match between Anand and Kramnik that will decide on new World Champion. As a little introduction I will try to show you all the things that happened in WC matches in the last 20 years.

After some thought, I've decided to start with the last Kasparov - Karpov match. These mighty 2K's battled each other for the better part of 80's. It all started in 1984 when Karpov was the world champion and Kasparov a new challenger. Before that Karpov played long matches against Korchnoi in James Bond like behind the game surrounding ( Karpov was Soviet star with system behind him, while Korchnoi was just the opposite and in the end he emigrateted from Russia in Switzerland). Strange things like antihypnotic glasses, secret messages in yogurth, Korchnoi's family being hostage and  other bizzare stories to feed the public were in the end better remembered than matches themselves.

But let's return to 1984 and first Kasparov - Karpov match. The rule was first who wins 6 games is a new champion. Well, this maybe worked in Fischer - Spassky match, but here we had two players of completly equal strength, so troubles were soon to appear. Karpov won games 3, 6, 7 and 9 and all thought that match will soon be over, but then nothing happened till the game 27 which Karpov won. In game 32 Kasparov won the first time and then later in games 47 and 48.  After 48 games played the match was aborted with result 5-3 in favor of Karpov, because of physical and mental fatigue of both players. Of course, even today chess fans like to argue who would win this match and "real" reasons why the match was terminated.

In new match in 1985 Kasparov won with score 13 to 11 and became 13th World Champion. Of course, the rules were changed and it was played on 24 games. In the case of even score champion would remain the same.

Kasparov defended his crown against Karpov three times: in 1986, 1987 and 1990. Match in Seville in 1987 was very interesting with many turns in lead, where Kasparov saved the title winning the very last game. Their last match was in 1990 which  was held in New York and Lyons ( France). There were 24 games (12 played in New York and 12 in Lyons). Result after New York leg was 6-6, and final score was 12.5 -11.5 for Kasparov. Kasparov said before this match that he'll prove once and for all that he is clearly better player, but result was again very close in the end.
Their overall record is in favor of Kasparov with 30 wins, 23 loses and 134 draws.

We shall look at the game 20 of their last match. So enjoy the game.

Hm, this was last championship match without problems like FIDE - PCA, classical and FIDE champion ect. In my eyes (and I know I'm not the only one) winner of Anand Kramnik match is real new champion. After all Topalov held FIDE title and in the end lost to Kramnik. But we'll get to whole this politics-stuff later, so patience Wink. Let's enjoy in this last "simple" match for the the championSmile
