Pterodactyl: Unpin Variation with 5.Bd2

Submitted by FM FM_Eric_Schiller on Sat, 09/12/2009 at 5:14pm.

The Pterodactyl is a very varied opening, with dozens of variations. One of the most important is the unpin variation 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nf3 c5 4.Nc3 Qa5 5.Bd2!?, setting up a discovered attack on the queen. Here is how I think Black should handle it:

The notes are there. There is some Chess Assistant flotsom, whenever you see %. Chess Assistant does some non-standard PGN, unfortunately.

You don't want to play that line, Black is dead. e5, not e6, must be played. That's in the notes.

30.Rxg4 seems to work but it doesn't after 30...Nxg4 31.Qxg4 Qxd5 and White will lose his bishop on d1 for nothing.
