Rook+King vs. King Mate

Submitted by rubyflyer on Wed, 12/03/2008 at 8:00pm.

Today, I was playing a game on live chess. Our ratings were very similar. Although my rating was higher, he was a better player. He used many tactics on me to get the upper hand. During the endgame, he had a rook and a king when I only had a king left. He could have easily won, had he known the process of getting a rook and king vs. king mate. Here is what happened in the game. It became a draw on time.

I, when we played this game, knew how to get a rook and king vs. king checkmate, and was not sure if he did. For the people who do not know how to get this type a checkmate, she the diagram below.

There are also more advanced ways for this type of checkmate, but it varies on the position, so I won't get into details. I hope you guys have learned something. Please comment and tell me if there are any mistakes that I didn't find. Hope to play you on live chess! (And see that you know this.)

Edit: I knew that their were faster ways, but I showed the most consistent way for beginners. :)

Yeah, as in Ninjabear's first example, I find the easiest and most patterned (so all the moves are immediately easy to see) way to mate is to keep the king right next to your rook. If you are trying to trap your opponent in the bottom left corner then you have your rook prevent him from going up or right, with your king protecting it, and whenever he moves his king away from your rook you move it in, and just keep repeating.

Don't worry about how many moves it takes, this is a mindless proccess, and as long as you've done it once or twice you can mate with this method in a matter of seconds.

That's not the fastest way. Here's an example to do it in many fewer moves:

There are other possible combinations of moves that can mate on the edges of the board (not just the corners) that I've seen. However, I'm not sure if the "edge" mates can be forced.

Let me try another example: (and tell me if anything is wrong)

Also, keep an eye out for opportunities to switch what direction you're pushing the king. Your objective is to get him on an edge, it doesn't have to be the one you started going for. For example, in the solution shown above, 5 Rg3 traps the King on the h file, and you can work toward a quicker mate.
