Shanky-Santarius

Submitted by GM Shankland on Mon, 08/03/2009 at 11:17pm.

The recent Chicago Class Championships was won by GM Dmitry Gurevich with a score of 4/5. My result was not amazing and I think fatigue was starting to settle in- I had played three nine round tournaments in a row and was not well rested. However, in round 4 I managed to win a nice game on the white side of the Catalan, which I present to you here:

One lesson I learned from analyzing this game was that I was complacent after the opening phase worked out really nicely for me. I'll have to think further whether my lack of calculation and killer instinct was due somewhat to fatigue, or just to the satisfaction of having a beautiful position. This will be my last week taking over GM Bhat's column; I hope you enjoyed the games and be sure to give him a hearty welcome back home!

Exyst - 30 g4?? Qxg4+ and black probably has a perpetual check somewhere to save himself.

What about 30. g4?  Wouldn't this put the queen out of her misery?

After 29. Be4, why can't Black take it?

A very nice and instructive game. The power of the 2 bishops was a pleasure to see. The notes were also very instructive. You did a great job taking over the column.

Another 8th move for Black to consider is 8...e5 This line takes courage, since it will lead to the isolation of the d-Pawn.  9.cxd5 cxd5 10.dxe5 Nxe5 11.Bxe5 Nf3 Bd6.

There is no immediate way to exploit Black's isolated d-Pawn, and because of this, both players have good chances.

indeed your position was great, must have felt great playing from there(: nice rook movements while the great eye of the Queen overlooked the whole dance(:
