SICILIAN NAJDORF!

Submitted by EnGliSHCheSsPlAy on Thu, 12/27/2007 at 6:14am.

I have been playing Najdorf variation for 2 years. I really like this opening but I have some problems.. for example after 6.Bg5 (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cd4 4.Nd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bg5) I usually play 6...e6 and after 7.f4 Qc7 8.Qf3 Nc6!?..this is the point..I play Nc6 because Kasparov rarely played it..but if White continues 9. o-o-o with the ideas Bd3, Rhe1 I do not know how to fight.

Can someone suggest me some ideas for Black??

I am very comfortable in this opening as white, familiar with various thematic sacrifices that black must study very closely to survive.  I find that Nc6 avoids many of these complications, though it doesn't seem as dynamic as other options.

generally nc6 is not played in this line.  the knight usually ends up out of play here, and can support the critical e5 square just as well from d7.  since the Q usually goes to c7 or b6, and the bishop to b7, the knight on this square doesn't block anything off, really, and is better positioned to defend the kingside, or in some cases, go to c5 to get another piece on e4.  also with the knight at c6 it becomes more difficult to safely play b5.

I play both sides of this opening...I recently played a game with this variation and after 6. Bg5 e6 7. f4 Be7 8. Qf3 Qc7 9. o-o-o Nd7 10. Bd3 b5 11. Rhe1 Bb7 12. Qg3 b4  I played 13. Nd5 and after a long series of fireworks, including a Q sac, the game could have been drawn but my opponent elected to go for the win and ended up losing.  check it out if you like...jimr vs jmg jan 16, in my archive.

no problem! i hope it helps (and more importantly i was correct with what i said). i would suggest to look at master games if you have fritz database of games or something im sure there are lots of ideas. even play through a series of najdorf games in this line quickly would do the trick Smile

Ok, Najdorf is very interesting opening. I have some ideas for black and white and try to explain them on the board below. Didnt want to go into specific variations so gave brief ideas more than anything. I dont have any databases on this computer, nor has my fritz 11 arrived yet (bought it for xmas) and i havnt played Nc6!? in Najdorf before. More importantly, iv no ready access to master games. Hope what i suggested is some help at least and perhaps some najdorf players could expand the article.

I think I would play Be7 to allow the castle and avoid double pawns, white still looks better but no reason to be scared, and at some point play e5
