A Different kind of Chess

Submitted by kenytiger on Mon, 02/18/2008 at 6:37pm.

Al Horowitz (photo) and Herbert Seidman played this game in New York during the US Championship of 1942. Neither of these great players won the event (Samuel Reshevsky did), but they produced a masterpiece to be talked about for generations.

This is one of the most violent games ever played in a US Championship. Both players go all-out against each other in a street-fight style. King's safety seems to be the last thing on the player's mind. Both Kings remain dangerously exposed in the center in this adrenaline-rush contest. Victory is a matter of who wants it most. Enjoy...

What a violent game as you informed..! Heavy hits for both sides. Back and forth power plays. Thanx for sharing. Excellent post! Smile

If you appreciate something, the boredom becomes suspense Retguvvie. And that is why people look at boring, no, suspensful things like golf, billiards or chess., in case you were wondering as a non-fan how people can stand that stuff.

Makes you think twice before you place your knight right in threat of a pawn.

Excellent post. I would have played the end game differently, but I would have been wrong.  The precision was amazing for such a violent game.

Impressive. Who knew that reckless offense would translate into such an interesting game?  This definitely shows a new side of chess that most grandmasters don't employ (maybe for good reason, I know I couldn't play such a game without messing up down the road). Good submission.

Wow.  Even though it seems like they're playing recklessly agressive, each move has a purpose.  I gotta get that down!  I never thought I'd be more impressed with a chess game than a real fist fight.

This game is madness. I love Al Horowitz. Did he ever play against any of the big european players of his time?
