The Bad Bishop

Submitted by invaderX17 on Tue, 04/28/2009 at 3:59pm.

Picture yourself in a battle. You have a huge army of footmen and it is your advantage. But would you like it when you own soldiers are crowded around you, preventing you from moving? That's what a bad bishop is like. A bad bishop is a bishop trapped by pawns fixed on the same color squares, and barely or is unable to move. An example would be:

Here, the white bishop serves multiple purpose by protecting pawns, but is unable to move. Even sometimes when the bishop could move, it is considered a bad bishop:

The black bishop could move, but only a little, on the edge of the board, it can only move one step.
