While there may be a lot of variations, that is out of the scope of this article. I think you did a good job explaining how the English Opening works, and if people want to experiment on their own lookng for different variations, then they should do so.

Hi grayhound what about this sequence of moves- 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 d6 4.Bg2 Be6 5.d3 g6 6.e3 Bg7 7.Nge2 Nge7 8. O-O O-O... Is this a variation? Any idea how many there are for the English opening? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks..

The general principal remains the same unless Black forces you to do otherwise.

Can I ask, does this opening require the same response from Black, or is the opening the same so long as blacks move doesn't interfere?
