The King Takes A Walk

Submitted by benws on Wed, 04/02/2008 at 6:05am.

With all the pieces still on the board, Botvinnik makes a few deep moves-and the scene is transformed! It has become an endgame, with two passed pawns close to queening. With a journey by the king himself, this game is a complete delight.

Mikhail Botvinnik masterfully refutes Black's defensive system at his 7th move 7.a4 (preventing 7. ... b5, one of the main objectives of Black's planned setup) . Next he launches 8.f4 so as to intimidate his opponent to castle. By the time Black activates his KR (Kings Rook), 29. ... Rc8, White has made a formidable phalanx of two joined and passed pawns.  White's strategy has proved to be right.
