The Amazing Pawn Game

The game you are about to see is by far the most amazing and entertaining one I have ever seen. At a local chess tournament in 1993, both Nick Schoonmaker and I were in the skittles room between rounds playing speed games right next to each other. My game had just ended when I saw Nick start another one with Richard Polotkin. Nick was a strong master, while Richard was a decent class C player.  Nick had earned the nickname “Bonsai” because of his absolutely uncompromising play, especially in speed chess.  Since Nick was playing white, I knew it would be a fun game.  Little did I know what was coming up.

But before you look at the game, let me tell you a little more about it.  Nick sent this game into Chess Life, and the editor Julie Desch (now married to Nick!) attempted to have it published, but it was rejected!  Everyone believed it had been a contrived game, but I can testify to its veracity.  I know, because I saw it played over the board.  We all laughed so hard over this game at the time, including Richard, that I knew I would never forget it.

Now you can all enjoy this little piece of chess history, a 16-move game with all of white’s moves made by pawns!

To Philip_Menace:

Yes, of course black could have made different moves. The point is, he didn't, and that's why all the pawn moves worked, and also why the game is so funny.

Thanks for your comment!

I think I counted 3 times that black's knight(s) could have taken a pawn.

"while Richard was a decent class C player" may be a bit of a stretch.  Perhaps he cracked at the proposition of sitting across from a master, maybe he was being a good sport, could have been time pressure, either way - I don't know very many C-players that would have allowed that to happen.  My eight year old could have seen the mating net closing at 14. f5.

Nonetheless, an educational display.

Other than obvious flaws like 2...Nxg4 which could make this line considerably weaker. It is an entertaining bit of chess trivia, I enjoyed it. Like the 2 move checkmate.

Okay, folks.  Here is the straight scoop.

The game is real.  It is not fake.  The people are real.  It happened exactly as I told it.

In which case Nick must feel special considering that he could come up with this game (especially at a rapid pace!).

If its real, nice job. If its fake, then you must feel special considering that you can come up with this game.

Re: RainbowRising

After I personally testify to the truth of the game in question, this person calls me a liar while hiding behind the anonymity of the Internet.

Typical.
