This Double Check is lethal

Submitted by kenytiger on Wed, 09/12/2007 at 12:54pm.

How often do we see an eleven-move checkmate between masters? no very often of course. Israel A. Horowitz once said: "The popular notion persists that Chess is an epic battle when masters get together. Far into the night the wrangle goes on,with the adversaries ascribing to each other subtle and profound nuances in every play." Sometimes we forget that Chess masters are human beings just like us; Tartakover once remarked: "The mistakes are all there , waiting to be made." The truth of the matter is, those short mates do happen between masters. Richard Reti and Sawielly Tartakover, two of the greatest Chess players of their time, produced the following eleven-move checkmate: Reti sacrificed his queen and then used a killer double check to put Tartakover KO in the first-round
