Tony Miles Speaks the English Opening

Submitted by NM GreenLaser on Sat, 05/30/2009 at 7:01pm.

Tony Miles was the first over the board chess grandmaster born in Britain. For more of his biography see http://www.chess.com/article/view/tony-miles---the-first-native-born-british-grandmaster. His partner in this game is Amador Rodriguez Cespedes who was born in 1956. This grandmaster was the co-champion of Cuba in 1984 and 1987. He was a trainer of Peter Leko. He is also a chess author. He now resides in Spain.

The game will demonstrate a variation of the English Opening that is not symmetrical. It is known as the English Four Knights, which is a main line. Despite its positional nature the players can easily be confronted with problems.

I think Miles' style of play is somewhat similar to that of Bent Larsen - introducing some novelty strategies and occasional use of offbeat openings.....

The style of play used by Miles was very often orthodox or normal. He could also deliberately lead his opponents off their tracks with provocative moves. He would often be aiming for an edge rather than an irrational position, but an opponent might respond emotionally to his play and seek more than the position justified.

sai asked, "why not 15....dxc5 gaining a pawn?" Whipster answered with an explanation. The "MOVE LIST" already had this: ( 15... dxc5 16. dxe5 Miles). For those with questions, try the move list to see if it satisfies you. Then, of course, questions are welcome.

After 15...dxc5, White can regain the pawn with 16.dxe5; 17.a4 soon follows, after which the Bishop blockade on c4 is imminent, and with the Black Bishop shut out of the game, White has a firm advantage.

I hope everybody knows to look at the move list,  because the extra stuff there is just terrific.  Tremendous job of anotating.  I'm a Tony Miles fan, but I'm not used to seeing him play such a 'normal' opening Tongue out.  Very enlightening.
