Triangulation.

Submitted by JCoombs1972 on Thu, 07/17/2008 at 9:26pm.

This puzzle should get you endgame buffs riled up for some more workouts on your endgame training, The title is triangulation which is a good weapon to use in the endgame to throw the turn to your opponent so you can make some headway into his/ her position so you can have that long awaited victory in the end. So please do remember to " Play Shrewdly and the victory will be there for you in the end"!

because 1. ... Kc7 2. Kc5 Kc8 3. Kb6 Kb8 4. Kxa6 Kc7 5. Kb5 Kc8 6. Kb6 Kb8 7. c7 Kc8 8. a6 and the a pawn queens

If you look at the puzzle solution above you can see that black moving to Kc7 when white can play Kc5 next move leads to a white win

3...Kc7 instead of 3...Kd8 would also lead to black pawn's capture.

Adding to  aareyes06's analysis,

2...Kc7 instead of 2...Kc8 can also win the game for white. Only this time he can capture the black pawn and then move forward with two passed pawns.

Howdy All!

Good discussion!  I wanted to jump in as well.  Let's try the triangulation to a different square.  That way victory will be assured for white.

This is an interesting position that should be understood fully.  Perhaps I have missed something, but it seems accurate.  Everyone's comments have been very focused on the position and that's very good in order to develop these endgame skills.

Blunder! White wins, if 2.Kc4 instead 2.Kc5.

Hi, 1. ... Kc7 does not lead to a draw. If black plays 1. ... Kc7 then after 2. Kc5, we reach the same position as in the puzzle after 4. Kc5; the white king on c5, the black king on c7, and black has the move. So choosing 1. ... Kc7 doesn't help black in this case - it just leads to a quicker defeat.

Yes 1...Kc7 leads to a draw, for example if Black had the move 1...Kc7 White replies 2. Kc5 going to b6 on the next move and gaining the a pawn.

2...Kc7 is the correct move which would force a draw.

Why not???

Why not 2...Kc7 instead 2...Kc8. Do we keep this way oposition?
