For first time readers:This is a series devoted to recent developments in theory from ChessPublishing.com. While it would not be possible to deal with every TN on the site, the focus would be both on topical variations and rare lines that can be used in practice.
When I began this series I promised myself that I would not repeat discussion of any variation twice. This would enable me to cover the entire range of openings on this site in due course of time. But what about new developments in the lines I have discussed before? I shall add a postscript whenever possible and keep you informed. It goes without saying that there are other wonderful games that I have excluded only on account of length. Two of them are Ivanchuk-Caruana and Morozevich-Vachier Lagrave, both from Biel 2009. Hopefully, some day I should post them here.
What you are going to see now is short and sweet. The first game has a stunning innovation in Caro-Kann.Before we see it, can you spot the combination here?
A cause for rejoicing for White. But what about Black? Ask yourself what his bishop was doing on a5.He was just a sitting duck.He should have returned to e7.Other improvements for Black are also possible. Do not lose hope.
In the second example,we begin with an unusual innovation for Black right on the 4th move! But now it appears that Black is in an uncomfortable position. Can you help?
If you look at the whole variation, it is not bad at all.First, it's cold shower for your opponent who was dreaming of a nice kingside attack. He can vary with 7.Qe2 to avoid an ending, but he needs to know how he should play.the final position does offer dynamic piece play for Black.Don't forget the b-file and the b4 outpost for your bishop.
But what should you do if you are White? Black's pawns on a6 and c6 are isolated and weak. What is more important, the c5 square is an ideal outpost for the White knight. See if you can bring your king to the queenside to exploit those weaknesses if the rooks are exchanged.
So both sides should know what they are doing and why.
There is a lot more on the site.Even as I write these lines, new content has been added.
