Why in Udine we do not forget Bobby Fischer

Perhaps in the States you don’t know what Bobby Fischer has represented for Italy and for Udine, my town. In the months immediately after the Fischer-Spassky match the news entries in Udine chess club were doubled, mostly boys of 16-18 years. One of them was Ivano Ceschia who in few months became master and then International and Fide master: the best player of Udine of ever and one of the four best players of Italy in that times. The book of Bobby on his 60 best games has been here a bestseller and, being an ‘honest’ book without secrets and lies, has seriously improved the mean level of our players in strategy, technics and tactics.

Of course we remember the name of Robert Fischer with regard and gratitude. The day of the news of his death for Udine chess club was a very sad day. That day in our chess play room ther was an unusual and strange silence.

to all of the mungbeans who believe that fischer should not be revered due to his outlandish comments in later life here this.   fischer was the greatest chess player to ever grace the earth.... better in my opinion then kasparov.    how on earth could anyone look at a shrivelled up, shaking, barely alive 10 year old with terminal cancer and not feel sympathy for him/her?.  of course we would feel sympathy for the child. why on earth should we not feel sympathy for the famous yank master? his mind was sadly in a state of disrepair and always was. why the f*ck cant anyone see that the poor man was severely mentally ill and cant be held responsible for his comments. no offence to all the yanks out there. but if this incredible talent was australian, all of his anti australian diatribe would be tolerated due to his aforementioned mental illness. the fact that the majority (not all) yanks have turned on him due to his comments on sept 11, jews ect   surprises me none. if only america knew in good time the absolute human treasure that is bobby fischer and appreciated him for what he is.bobby would have come home. i know alot of yank chesslovers will agree with what im saying and rest assured it is not you i have an issue with. i just find it a terrible mental problem that america has, in that they cant take a verbal flogging without holding grudges. bobby was absolutely right on his 1992 stance regarding the spassky rematch. if only his home governmant could learn to back the f*ck down his final 15 years on earth might have been spent more productively.    (please note.   i am an admirer of the good things about the states, but the fact that  you did what you did to bobby will forever leave me miffed.   as the old saying goes.....sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me)
