Winning Simplification

Submitted by Patzer24 on Mon, 05/05/2008 at 11:54am.

Here is a game from the 2008 US Senior Open, IM Kaufman - IM Foygel with full annotations and commentary:

In this game we saw black play some slow opening moves which allowed white to take a lead in development. Then white was able to find the key move 13. Qd5 simplifying into a winning endgame with the better pieces and a safer king which made all the difference.

I would like to make coule comments about the opening of the game. Move 4... a6 is not a mistake, but in fact one of the most popular lines in the system.  It was played before by Svidler and Azmaparashvili. Same is true about 5...b5 (it was played 299 out of 390 games according to chessbase MegaDatabase 2008). In fact plan with a6 and b5 is very typical in such positions. 8...c5 is again a typical plan in such position and was played before by Inarkiev and Szabo. Move 9...Qb8 is the first independ move in the game and in fact a novelty (theory recommends 9... Bxe4). 27... a5 was a terrible blunder for black.

Given that Black is an IM, I really think he was distracted or just having a bad day. He fell right into several obvious traps. I don't think his loss is simply due to his post-modern opening (i.e. lack of control of the center).

very nice game, black could play better a few errors.black shouldnt have resigned why he hasnt played castle one down against white.he didnt have to exchange castle with knight.

Kid_Malenco,sometimes we just underrate ourselves when we can actually play better than we thought.

This game attest to what I am saying.........

Sometimes in these games we play names or is it titles and end up underperforming on the board!

Nevertheless this was a good game.

Great play by white. Black's big error seems to have been trying to develop both flanks at once to counter white's control of the center. Nf6 then a kingside castle instead of pawns to aA6 and b5 would have given black a powerful defensive position to work from. Instead he was really behind the curve and spread weakly by turn 6.

The queen trade cemented white's positional advantage and pretty much ensured that black couldn't mount an effective counterattack. Several good moves by white to keep the pressure on down the stretch.

White's opening helped to validate my typical opening scheme and streategy for controlling the center when my opponent gives me the opportunity for an ideal pawn center, especially the extention of the center with f4 and the development of the Bishops to the third rank, backing the center.

Playing 15..f6?? was horrible, but what was wrong with 15...e6 16.Nc3 Ne7 and castle (if needed) the next move? Don't see a big plus here for white then.....
