The Future of Chess Learning...

With a little bit of time on my hands today, I decided to take a quick break from my management duties here on the busiest website in the world Tongue Out to do something a little more useful than getting my butt kicked for an hour at bullet chess Wink...

I've actually wanted to share my thoughts on Chess.com's newest, and perhaps least known feature here in my blog for some time -- and express my disappointment with many of our members from the past -- ;-( (they don't have an emoticon for a "frownie-winkie-face" yet, but it means "I'm sad, but also half kidding, and hey, you get it right?"). I love all of you very much, so don't worry...

I'm talking about Chess University of course! Unfortunately, this new and amazing "interactive learning platform" is not only our least known feature, but is likely one of our least appreciated. So, what is Chess University and what gives me the right to make such a bold claim as to dub it the "future of chess learning"? Glad you asked Smile!

Chess University (and you can click here to join the group if you interested) is something that combines the most modern teaching technologies available (live, "webcasting" of video screen and voice) with the need for every aspiring chess player to gain direct access to strong players/coaches. With Chess University a student is getting personal attention (almost private) from a trainer who would normally cost double, triple or sometimes more what students are able to pay per hour in a small group setting.

It makes sense for the coaches too! A coach can offer his lectures at a more affordable price than he/she would have to privately, reach a broader audience, and with all the lessons being saved automatically to a video library, he can send his students back to a video to answer a question, and thus save time down the road when a particular pupil may need review on a certain concept or idea...

When David and I first launched Chess University nearly two years ago, we hoped all our members would see it as I explained above! Unfortunately, only handful of our members took advantage of our first two courses (How to Play the King's Gambit by David and Don't Fear the Sicilian by yours truly) -- and NOW you wish you could get access to those groups Cry...

Why did so many of you make the mistake of not taking advantage of Chess University? Well, for those who may have never tried to hire a private coach (which generally comes at a price north of $50/hour for a titled player) -- paying for material you thought you might be able to get elsewhere didn't seem to make sense. Understandable of course, but unfortunatly a bad judgement call Frown... Many ambitious chess players missed out on our first University Courses, and have done nothing but try to get into our Private Groups (and each course has information available only to those who register) ever since.

The good news? University is back! This time around, David and I have "tweeked" (not "tweeted" Tongue Out) a couple critical elements:

  • Instead of teaching them ourselves, we have built an "All Star" cast of trainers -- all of them technologically capable -- and all of them totally pumped up to teach!
  • GMs Magesh Panchanathan and Dejan Bojkov, IM Mac Molner, and one of Chess.com's most active coaches Kairav Joshi are rocking new courses each month!
  • We have broken up scheduling of the courses to offer a wider arrange of available time slots and committment requirments from the students, hoping to increase flexibility...
  • More payment options!
  • More topics being offered at once to ALL LEVELS of understanding!!!

So, why am I spending time today to pump this up? Well, if you think it's because I'm afraid to play Bullet against the slew of new titled players in Live Chess you're wrong!!! Sealed

It's because I care about you Chess.com! You are here, paying for a premium membership with hopes of becoming better chess players, and you aren't taking advantage of this golden opportunity Yell!! What's wrong with you?

Just kidding, again... I love you whether you take a course or not Embarassed

Until next time...

    Hey, this is a University.

Do you have anything like Elementary School, or even Pre-K?

What would be the best way to teach an absolute beginner?

    Thanks for your advice!

I hit the join group button, does that mean it's going to charge me? I didn't mean to hit it, if it's going to charge me please take me off the list. I'm broke, I can't afford it :(

Sadly, I feel few people are ready to pay for this kind of instruction, because they just don't realize its value... Frown

How about providing a free sample lesson so we can see how it works before having to spend money? Or offering one whole course free to members who could then decide whether they want to pay for additonal courses? How do I know that if I spend my money I will not just wind up with information I could get for free on the internet on this site or other sites?

Consider a series on reperotire lessons where you teach folks an opening and the lines and either give them a PGN or teach them how to make one in another window so they can use it. Your target audience of players lack good repertoire building skills. Give folks a 5 hour lesson on the Ruy Lopez WITH a PGN containing the lines and variations to play and send them out into the world to PLAY it on your site. I bet that gets some good buys.

Pick one 1.d4, one 1.e4, one 1.c4, and one 1.Nf6 opening for white. Go 10-15 moves deep in the lines. There's a lesson series for White.

Opening downloadable DVDs are big sellers on Chessbase.com. Do them live here with GMs. It's the "shortcut" from reading books that people are looking for. Learn it on a Saturday via Chess.com instead of a month via a book.

    Other ideas . . . .

    1. Add link to the learning page

    2. Advertise a list of courses, like you do in Study Plans, or like a University does for a particular major. Let people look ahead and predict what is coming.

    3. Advertise Group Buys. If X people sign up then the cost will be Y.  If Z people sign up then X person will do a course on Y.

    4. Advertise Limited Repertoire Building.  GM XXX teaches you his repertoire as White on the QGD. Limited to the first XX people!  Secret stuff that won't be shared!

    5. Advertise Unlimited Repertoire Building.  GM XXX teaches you the Caro-Kan as Black. ZZ part series.

I suspect that if you advertise the following four courses as a sticky on the main page, you will get a tremendous sign up: 1. Learn a 1.e4 repertoire; 2. Learn a 1.d4 repertoire; 3. Learn to play against 1.e4; and 4. Learn to play against 1.d4.

The hardest thing to do is make/learn a repertoire at a low level witn no coachng. Hand out some .pgns. Teach 8 moves deep. Cut'm loose!

Where do you find information about these courses Danny? Wink  If you don't show people where, they are not going to go out of their way and look.  I mean how will people know that the Chess University forum exists?  Or where and how to find it?  Why should they? Innocent  It's not something you can access without many clicks of the button, and quite a lot of initiative.  Much easier to find 'chess coaching' and 'click!'  The path of least resistance...  Even I did not know that Chess U. was still doing things until quite recently and I am quite an active site member, and I really don't know what they're doing yet. Innocent

Additionally, in the course offering, it's nice when there is specificity on what materials will be discussed and given.  What I liked about your course Danny [besides the scope/depth/quality of the material] is that it was very well structured, and that we knew what topic would be discussed each lesson before it started.  Even so, I recall before the course, I did not know how you teach chess - tactics problems? famous games? opening lines?  common middlegame structures/plans?  point out mistakes in students' Sicilian games?  what approach favored in sicilian?  how much access do we have to the coach - can we ask questions/ submit games, etc?  The customer prefers less ambiguity - they want to know what they are getting, in terms of tangible benefits.  Like if I were to take a course on rook endings, I would not want to take one in which I would have to learn how to play the Lucena and Philidor position for the one-millionth time.

Also a site idea for coaches:  maybe you could utilize tactics trainer and/or chess mentor to make problem sets (pins/skewers/forks/x-rays/triangulation, common sicilian motifs whatever).   Maybe this functionality exists.

You guys have got to work on the accessibility.  B/c you're right - it makes far more sense to take a course and pay $10/hr than take a private lesson at 2, 5, or 10 times the price.  People are not wholly unreasonable; I really think it is a case of people not knowing their options.
