What is the world coming to? Or should we say what was the world coming to? There was a time, before we carried computers in our pockets that serve as phones and such... when no one had caller id. Really. It was not so long ago. I promise.

One holiday season, a very nerdy little girl decided to have some fun. What, you may ask, was this nerdy little girl’s idea of fun? Aside from playing “Mary Had A Little Lamb” on the keys of the telephone, she thought “hmm, I will get out the white pages of the phone book (for you youngsters… that used to be the listing of all the residents' phone numbers in your city) and I will call up people and wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! What fun!” And that is just what she did. Every night from December 14th to December 31st, our nerdy little girl called up perfect strangers in her town and brought them holiday cheer.

On one occasion, a woman managed to speak with the girl before she could hang up. The woman asked the girl why she called. Our girl said she thought it would be nice to give warm wishes to people. The woman pressed the girl for more of a reason. The girl said she thought it would make people happy. The woman said it did make her happy. She thanked the girl. The woman told the girl it was a very kind thing to do.

Every holiday season our nerdy little girl remembers that. Though these days she has little time to make *crank* calls, in her heart, she wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Oh yes… and more Chess!! The favorite game of many a nerdy little girl.

    Merry Christmas!

I'll make you want me... you'll see.

This is my Christmas song... this year.

What happens when you watch sappy movies late at night... About A Boy... pretty good flick.

guys... you're breaking my heart. yes, i know what you're saying is more real than not. i think much of it is a result of a culture based on scarcity. "get the other guy... before he gets me"... that type of thinking. it's not that simplistic. i believe, though, if you can see beyond the asshole facade... most people really do care about other people. i think many folks put up the facade to protect themselves from everyone else's facade... a vicious cycle. i don't know. maybe i am just a naive sap and full of it. it's not like i have always been treated well... trust me. at times, i have been the asshole. haven't we all? i believe the milk of human kindness still flows. you just might have to dig a little deeper to find it.

It is precisely because of EP's truism that I celebrate the holidays rather than begrudge them. Because at least there remains a few days relief each year from the ass-holery of the lyin' share (pun intended) of the calendar... even if it is the by-product of hypocrisy. This beggar appreciates any and all crumbs of human kindness - however stale and moldy they may be.

I knew a little boy who prefered "pranks" that involved eggs, pebbles in the valve stems of tires and burning bags of crap. He found Christmas annoying because people "had the Christmas spirit" for two or three days. This meant that they behaved like decent human beings, which is what the boy thought they were supposed to do yaer 'round instead of acting like assholes. Which they did.
