Leisurely Chess

There is a lot of posting about making games as live as possible, clamoring for fast games (blitz, etc.).  I still long for those years past when chess is played leisurely, no time involved, as if chess is some form of meditation.  I imagine playing under a cool shady tree in mid afternoon, waiting patiently for the friend to move, no prodding, no nothing.

Why not bring that back, or perhaps why not change our chess attitude and think of it as something relaxing, something worthwhile, comparable to reading a good book, or watching a movie, dancing, or even praying.  Feel the breeze...

I played blitz with friends a long time ago--it was fun!  I only played 1 FICS rated blitz game so far, yes the adrenaline was pumping and surprised I won.  In friendly standard games, the pressure is in going beyond the 'usual' thinking time--you don't wan't your opponent lose interest.  There's also a lot of pressure when you have a strategic position--not knowing which is better.  In blitz, you go to war and ask questions later.  I guess... to each his own.

I have played blitz games a couple of times, and I don't see how people can enjoy more the regular games. Being pressured by the position is much more fun than being pressured on time.

win, loose or draw, perhaps with a little bit of jealousy, but yes..retaining the friendship :P

Nice to hear; of course we can choose which kind of chess we play--some are happy with blitz or lightning games, some are happy with standard games, and so on.  But in all cases, win, lose or draw, we retain the friendship...  Smile
