ERIK! How about this idea????

I periodically like to use different openings but my opponent will play some off the wall move by the time we've reached book. How about setting up game rooms for particular openings where the opening moves are already made then two playes can meet at that table and complete the game from whatever standard opening they choose? Kind of like setting up the computer to a book move then letting it complete the game. I could scroll down and practice against the Sicilian with the Smith-Morra, or the Giuoco against the two knights etc.

Thx,

Erik, listen to the man- I think it is a fine idea and it would most certainly benefit my game.

Not only as a training tool. There have been innumerable thematic tournaments that explored particular openings and even specific sub-variations with combatants alternating colors.

As a training tool this would be a good idea. I am new to taking chess seriously and am focusing alot of energy to openings as they set the stage for the feel of the game. Running through games that have already been played is not as effective as actually playing through one or seeing how it affects endgame play.

Great analysis of why it wouldn't be a good idea rich. I think that your in depth reflections have added a lot to this little chat. However, I know quite a few experts, masters and some GM's who use chessbase in this very fashion. It was an idea that came up in a discussion with them. They say it's a good idea and they use it as a training tool. So I think it would be good for me too.

But, it is hard to argue with your point. I'm not sure which of the six words to start debating in your one liner.

But the other player can change his/her mind. I think it would also be a good training tool. Also, you could test unfamiliar openings for fun.

Just create a game and name it "Sicilion Opening Only," or whatever opening you want.
