Is your chess style influenced by the stars?

Whether or not you believe in astrological horoscopes, synastry, or predictions based on the Zodiac, it is interesting to note that no chess World Champions have been born under the sign of Libra ......

2. Alexandre Deschapelles - Pisces

3. Louis-Charles De La Bourdonnais - Birthdate Unknown

4. Howard Staunton - Birthdate Uncertain - Aries or Taurus

5. Adolf Anderssen - Cancer

6. Paul Morphy - Cancer

Official World Champions

So, why no Librans at the top of the chess tree?

Is it because the astrologers say they always seek 'balance' and therefore tend to draw rather than win?  Who knows...

In any case, the 2nd highest-rated player in the world right now is Levon Aronian, and he just happens to be a Libra - so maybe one day, if he somehow manages to beat Magnus Carlsen in a World Championship match - then our astrological chess collection will be complete.  Cool

(but don't hold your breath!)

    Well, no wonder I suck. I'm a libra! ;)

Yeah, that's me in a nutshell!  LOL, that's how the clock and I became enemies.

Dodge, according to astrology, you seem to be behaving like a Libra!

Weighing up all the options, balancing opposing points of view, not making your mind up either way, etc... lol  Wink

Libras are all conceived at drunken Xmas and NYE parties?  lol

The time of year thing seems plausible, but it's apparently never held up to scrutiny, so I don't know.  I don't really believe that the stars can influence us a whole lot, but it seems possible that through the ages people learned how to plot astronomy to time other patterns in life.  Anecdotally I've actually been impressed by astrology, considering how flimsy the explanations are and how lowly its reputation is.

Actually, I believe there is something to astrology, in so far as maybe a person's personality can be influenced by the time of year they were born. I doubt very much it has anything to do with stellar constellations though. More likely to be something to do with the seasons, etc... similar to the way people's moods are affected by the different phases of the moon.

There has to be a rational explanation for the Libran mystery, because if all people are born the same, then why is there a persistent anomaly in the statistics?  Undecided

You sound somehow skeptical of the zodiac's validity, lol.

That is so weird. I wonder what's behind this statistical phenomenon?

Why didn't anyone tell this Libra that before I got into chess?  Check this chart out, too, we're the lowest percentage of GMs in a large sample:  http://www.ciuboda.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/f1-chess-sun-mercury-astrostatistics.jpg
