The expression "He is a 419 guy", in Nigerian local parlance, means the person in question is a fraudster or confidence trickster. It draws from the section of our penal code that bears the punitive description for crimes of fraud and obtaining under false pretenses.

This expression has since gone global and viral as a descriptive for Nigerian scams and fraud abroad. It has become the ugly face of Nigeria internationally. It has also become a form of obsession for some folks to maintain if he is Nigerian, he must be a scammer of sorts. But of course, it goes without saying that this is as misconceived as saying if he is Italian, he must be Mafiosi or if he is Irish, he must make bombs.

I have heard quite a few of these expressions. Like in "He can't be Russian, where's his Vodka bottle?" or "He looks British, ask him for the nearest Fish 'N Chips" and "He's blonde, he must be Swedish". But the most perplexing yet, for me to date, is "If he's American, he must be Israeli!"

These qualitative expressions exist for all climes but it is a little too much to bear for Nigeria to be officially certified by FIFA as 419! All puns are clearly intended but they do not detract from the fact that the irony here is irresistibly challenging. In 13 past World cup matches, Nigeria has won 4, drawn 1 and lost 8. With our loss to Korea, Nigeria has now won 4, drawn 1 and lost 9. This makes for a FIFA certified rating of 419!

Well, what can one say? I don't think I would be saying "thank you" much to the boys for bringing home this 419 trophy from SA 2010 but truth be told, we did reap what we sowed. We sowed inepitude, corruption and fraud aided by a dubious and manipulated selective quota system to reap failure with a capital F!

@ Vampyrex1: "They run the risk of a 419 Rating"... indeed, indeed!Money mouth

@madpawn: "The most corrupt societies institutionalise it so it does not appear so - it becomes a legal entitlement.

However, corruption emerges from power imbalances; it is used to ensure that the imbalance works in your favour."... priceless!

All systems are capable of corruption. It is always easy to say that the other fellow is corrupt, dishonest, or just 'not like us'. The most corrupt societies institutionalise it so it does not appear so - it becomes a legal entitlement.

However, corruption emerges from power imbalances; it is used to ensure that the imbalance works in your favour.

Sorry about the 419 - perhaps people will sit up and notice, as a result of this... they may even change a few things? After all the worst thing the corrupt fear is light.

@vampyrex1:Well, my cherished friend, puns were intended! Never you mind about this being a little over the top-I did intend for it to cut both ways.

But seriously, I often wondered why hi-tec had not been deployed to the game of soccer like in other major international tourneys. Most riots and clashes on the pitch are fuelled by the absence of such a technology, impassioned folks just up and take the laws into their own hands. Given that referrees are human, errors must occur.

There can only be one line of reasoning for this; it's the corruption and 'fixing' that keeps these utilities off the playing pitch. I do think soccer is a terribly corrupt game from all corners and I dare add especially FIFA. I have found, for most World cup encounters, groups that are obviously rigged for a dominant and strong team to emerge (Brazil, Argentina are examples that readily comes to mind). Why would you rarely ever find both teams in the same group? FIFA counts on their abilities to draw massive crowds and by it, generate heart-warming revenues! That arrangement which pleads time zones and continental profiling does not make for fair play!

It is also impossible for referrees to lack passion and not have secret 'loyalties' to some soccer team and that by itself is a huge weight around the individual's neck, ditto lines men too. I must agree completely-it's time to get rid of the human factor on the soccer pitch!
