League Congress - Sunday

1.5/3 in the Open and my only loss to a 209.  I'm happy.  With the next game, I am not:

"Nobody ever won a game by resigning" is a wise quote indeed.  And you know what else is wise?  Making sure you know your king and pawn endgames!  And so to the slightly lazy round 5:

So I finish my first Open section on 50% and a grading performance of 158.  I'm quite pleased with that.  As for prizes, I shared the grading prize with my last round opponent.

Excellent performance, I intend to play the open at some point, once I think I'm good enough. Might give it a go next year. Well done though.

To be honest, I didn't really look at it.  I'd been hoping to provoke 19. g4? Nh4! aiming for a swindle.  I spent most of my time considering 19. ... Rxf5 was what I spent most of my time looking at and I briefly looked at 19. ... gxf5 until I saw how stupid that was.  I never really considered your move but my opponent thought it was more accurate too.

    I imagine something like 20. d4 cxd4 (Fritz prefers 20. ... Bf6 despite it giving away a pawn) 21. cxd4 Bxd4 22. Bxf7 Qxf7 23. Qf4+ Ka8 24. Qxd4! and it's getting a bit weak.  But that's not why I didn't play it.  I was just tired and I really couldn't come up with a plan.  After 9. ... hxg6 I assumed a win would be forthcoming and when it wasn't I was happy to draw.

Never mind. Although, on the last game, what do you think of 19...exf5? Then you can try to carry on attacking with a plan of f4 at some point, which would be difficult to prevent without sonme sort of concession. Perhaps.
