Dominant world champions and more

Here's a table, based on chessgames.com metrics, of points scored by world champions and other leading grandmasters between each other. By 'leading grandmasters', I mean the following players:

  • Everyone who played a World Championship match
  • Everyone who made it into top 8 of Candidates' Tournaments, matches and FIDE Knockout championships
  • Participants of AVRO 1938, New York 1927 and St Petersburg 1914

There are currently 96 players in the table. Undisputed World Champions are in bold, World Championship match/tournament participants and FIDE World Champions are in italic.

Nice work Spectrowski! Players of old seemed to have less opportunity to play strong opposition than modern players. Good to see Lasker up there.

I believe that behind each and every 'gut feeling' in sports, there's some kind of statistic that explains it.

    AngeloPardi

An interesting thing is that... this list is not very interesting Smile
I mean that it agrees with our gut feeling that Kasparov, Fischer, Karpov, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine or Carlsen must be on top of every ranking list.

But the one thing I absolutely wanted to say is :
What an awesome job by Spectrowsky !!

    Lucidish_Lux

Of the top list, only Pillsbury, Chigorin, Steinitz, and Lasker actually have more wins than draws. Perhaps that's due to the era in which they played....but still.

Sadly, Morphy didn't play anyone from the modern World Championship era.

You can copy this table to Excel and manipulate it in any amount of ways.

fantastic.  you're analysis is very interesting as usual. great idea to compile this.  do you have an excel file or someway to manipulate the information?  id love to be able to sort the information in vaious ways (#games, #opponents, ratio of wins/draws/losses, etc...).

Very interesting comparisons, Spektrowski!  Could you please include Paul Morphy?  Thank you.

Nice piece, Spektrowski.  Valery Salov is impressively high on this list, ahead of Gelfand and Korchnoi.  Sad story Salov is.
