Taiwan National Championships for 2013 are being played at the moment. It is a quite different experience than playing in a tournament in the 'west'.
At first one might find it curious that the reigning champion is a high-school kid rated 1600. This despite there being many 2000+ players resident on the island, and rumours have it that even some titled ones have put their hats down here.
Well, I start to understand why many self-respecting players refuse to play in the local chess tournaments... or to deal with the local chess federation in general.
