8-Ball in the Corner Pocket

Here's a great Morphy game that everyone should check out. It's very short, but filled with tactics. Morphy, playing without his queenside rook, sacrifices a few pawns to set up an attack. His opponent, feeling the pressure, decides to trade queens. It seems to be a wise decision, but Morphy then stuns him with an unexpected corner mate. You won't want to miss it!

Great question. For some reason I had assumed the d file was covered (maybe I forgot that the white queen on d1 was actually a black queen on d1?). I don't think there is a forced mate, because white's rook on e1 is totally pinned with the queen still on d1!

Fortunately, white can just play 13 Rxd1+ Bd6 14 Nxh8, with threats on g7 and g8, and an extra rook. It looks unlikely that the knight will be trapped, because the b2 bishop is always aiming to free it and black most likely has to take time out to defend his knight on g8. ...Kxf7 was the only way to try to punish white's impudent knight, but that of course got mated; otherwise, it simply comes in handy to have a knight on g6 :)

Oops, I forgot that white is playing an odds game, so the material would actually be roughly even! Of course, in a normal game, there would be a rook on a1, but you can't complain about getting even material after being down a rook for nothing the whole game!

Nice, though Black helps out a little... does White have a forced win after 12...Kd8?

Tactics are very important, guys! Without them, it's so easy to find a way to lose on every move.
