A Bad Day At The Office

Here is a game in which the great Alekhine goes down in a mere twelve moves. It is yet another example of how you should never let your guard down, even if you are the reigning world champion. As far as I can tell, no other champion has lost this quickly during his time at the top. Enjoy this Muzio Gambit!

    jayeschessking,

Ng6 certainly stops the check, but then white plays Rxg6 and  after hxg6 white plays Qxg6 and black can only play Bg7 in which Qxg7 is checkmate! No better is if black instead of hxg6 plays Bg7 because Rxg7 is mate!

The King's Gambit is very tricky and the Muzio Gambit is one of its sharpest variations. Many masters and gms have fallen victim to the King's Gambit!

Oh, well if it's blitz that's fine Smile It's very easy to lose like that, even as a very strong player, sometimes. Still, it must have been pretty embarrassing.

A  game from a blitz tournament, but no WC should ever lose in this manner.

Curious, even not very strong player would play 6...Qh4+ first ...

Picture looks as if not real ?

Ouch! Really nasty loss, which is sometimes possible in really aggressive openings. I've seen a lot of grandmaster blunders, like when stripunsky hung his c1 bishop in this year's us championship -- I just wish such players would do that to me! Of course, for every one game where such a blunder happens, there may be 1000 games where that player doesn't blunder like that; such games are less likely to be highlighted Wink
