Dinner With Andrei

Yes, I turned 15 today. Isn't it amazing? I feel so old. Drop me a happy birthday note or trophy if you can.

Anyway, here's a great game that Topalov won back in '04. He gives up the exchange to acquire a tight bind on white's position. His advantage is so great that he is able to quietly build up an attack with his limited material while his opponent watches helplessly. Then he crashes through with an elegant mating combination.

I borrowed the title from chessgames.com.

May be I am wrong, but it seems the game was a blits or a blind one at least  on
    A. Kharlov's side! His stategy is absolutely wrong, it seems, that he was afraid of his oponent's titles 35. Nb5 was definitely the worst move possible! With a material adventage (Rooh) one should trade pieces as soon as possible and as much as poswsible! Hovewer, this is a good game by Veselin Topalov, but a risky one. Alex

Happy 15th birthday! I don't remember what it was like to be 15... I would have to think very hard to remember. Enjoy it!

That was some brilliant play by Topalov - giving away material even though the advantage was not clearly apparent. I think it shows some uncommon deep understanding of the game.

    Thanks for sharing.
