In New York Alekhine held a blindfold simul on 26 board. It happened in 17 April, 1924. The final result: +16 –5 =5. In this game Alekhine presented the evening meal for his adversary in form „mate in 3” or „mate in 4”. His opponent could have selected only from this two-course dinner.

When the adversary ate up the first course he asked for the second. Alekhine announced for him the second course without looking of board.

White informed his adversary that mate is in 3: 23.Qh6 Qf8 24.Re8! and in the third move mate is on g7. – And if I would take the Bishop with my Queen? – asked the opponent. – Then mate is in 4 – responded Alekhine readily, still always wihout looking of board. And said the moves in this serie: 22… Qxf6 23.Re8+ Nf8 24.Nh6+! Qxh6 25.Rxf8+ Kxf8 and mate is in the fourth, 26.Qd8 #.

It was an instructive blindfold game. It was found in the „Hungarian Chessworld” magazine in the number of January of 1925 volume.

It took several minutes to unravel Alekhine's elegant 3/4 move mates.  What an Incredible display of mental visualization!

Thanks for sharing this game with us.

I call "edepra" 's attention to the fact that Alekhine in New York was playing for the blindfold world record. It held the Hungarian Gyula Breyer from 1921.(Kassa,now Kosice, on 25 chessboard). It is sad that Breyer in this year dead in his 28th.

But nowadays the world recorder is also an Hungarian, Janos Flesch (in 1980, on 52 boards). Sadly that he also dead in an accident in England in 1983 in his 50th year.

The 2nd mate was lovely, and harder to see. The first one was doable, if you grill Tactics Trainer :D

Amazing game, and I agree with most of what people are saying here: Blindfold games are such an amazing feat to behold!

Help for "bulletchess4fun": At the end of original game follow my describing below the board. After last White move 24.Re8! Black moves something and 25.Qg7 mate. The Black Queen couldn't take it because the e8-Rook keeps it on the 8th row.

Mate in 4: 22... Qxf6 happens (against 22... gxf6 as in the game) and then follow my describing! It is worth the trouble!

Awesome becomes a clishe and doesn't do it justice... More like breath - taking, considering that he had another 25 blind - folded games going on at the same time!
