I learned

My first chess tournament was at my college, with local students, whose experience with chess was probably just as in depth as mine. My dad used to play and beat my brother and I.

Anyway, as the Resident Assistants opened the competition and and recalled the games common moves, they mentioned "en passant". I had never heard of that before, and was relieved of my competition jitters by the fact that ideally the session was a learning experience.

The game went well, until the exchange of queens asked a bit more of my logic than I was prepared to give. I lost.

Thus the conclusion of my first chess tournament... last week
