Paddy Patzer's Pile of Books: 1000 Checkmate Combinations

You have heard it. You have said it. You have ignored it. Tactics-Tactics-Tactics is the bread and butter for improving chess players. Still, it is hard to follow this fine piece of practical advice. Too many chores and privileges compete for our attention and use up our Time Budget.

There are many different online tools available for tactics training. Is there really need for yet another book with tactics and combinations? Well, that is of course to some extent a question of personal taste. Personally, I enjoy carrying around a book in my backpack in order to be able to feed my brain a healthy dose of exercise whenever I get a break. For this very purpose I thing "1000 Checkmate Combinations" is an excellent alternative. The author himself stresses that the problems should be solved without a chess board and that it might be good practice to settle for just a few combinations per day.

The only thing I can hold against the book is that it is too old or, if you like half full glasses, too good! How is that? Well, almost all of the problems have been used in other books. A well read chess enthusiast might find it a bit annoying to see the same classic problems yet again but on the other hand to repeat what you have already learned is not necessarily a bad thing.

In all: A fine book.

I have 3 different tactic books but they almost always have around 20 tactics that are repeated in all three.

You can never have enough tactics books-even if we never finish them! I have been eyeing this one and the one by Nunn. Of course the tactics trainer on here is great since you don't know the "theme".The clock puts pressure on you(which could be good or bad). You have an analysis board and the lines. My wish(always wanting more) is that you could go throught the analysis by clciking on it and the board pieces would move accordingly. I like to start with the ones I "failed" and do them again to reinforce the ideas I am not seeing the first time. It takes more time but I think you learn more and hopefully it will stay with you. How many times have you missed a tactic in a book a second time!(after not picking up the book for a good while.

Indeed! That "minor piece" of information got lost in a cut-n-past exercise when writing the text in another software.

NimzoRoy was right, just as a touch of accuracy, the mentioning of the authors and/or ISBN would have been nice. Will look forward to getting this book. Good suggestion. Thanks.

Yes, I think I have 3 copies of this book, each time making the purchase without realizing that I already had it and failed to open it.   Is there a treatment center I could go to for this?

I guess this is just another symptom of my incurable anal-retiveness, but how about providing the iSBN (barcode) number and/or the author and publisher's names and date of publication?

Never mind, here's the info http://www.amazon.com/1000-Checkmate-Combinations-Victor-Khenkin/dp/1906388709

Cheaper is Fred Reinfeld's 1001 Brilliant Checkmates, also available at amazon - no link given because it's way too long and way too long links rarely work in my experience.

It's probably a good book to own and solve a few puzzles every day with but not very useful from the library unless you're a really fast solver

Yes, I have that book. It is a translation of a russian book, and very good for your tactics.
