Self Studies

Well, I decided quite recently to give the Old Brain some work-out. Chess seemed like an excellent idea. I have played Backgammon and Bridge at a fairly high level. However, when I tried chess years ago I soon got discouraged from choosing a bad approach to Chess Studies (i.e. memorizing Openings).

I hope to be more succesfull this time.

Indeed! Somehow the Myth that "Opening Studies is the path chess excellence" (Or in my case: Enthusiastic "Wood Pushing") is unfortunately very convincing.

As you rightly say, memorizing openings is a bad idea.  It's better to understand the principles behind good moves and then you can find good moves for yourself. Smile
