2014 Mid-America Open

The 2014 Mid-America Open was held in Clayton, MO from March 14-16, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.  There was a record turnout of about 260 players in seven sections. Click here to see the USCF rating report.

I tied for first with 4-1, with GMs Corrales, Hoyos, Paragua, and IM Priyadharshan.  I won my first three games, and took two half-point byes the last two rounds so I could teach kids' classes at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis.

My best game was my first, where I made several sacrifices and ended up checkmating my opponent.

My next game was not as smooth.  I didn't get any advantage, and when things were getting interesting, my opponent fell into a trap where his queen has no squares.

My last game was my most difficult.  I won a very long endgame that should have been drawn with best play.  My opponent was fresh off beating the #1 seed the previous round, Mark Paragua.

Nikki scored 2-3 in the U 1300 section.  She played well, and likely gained about 5 rating points.

I'd like to thank the CCA for holding this nice event in Saint Louis, and look forward to playing next year.
