Magnus

Magnus seems to be on another level nowadays. I guess I will have to change my opinion (which almost nobody agreed with anyways) that Morphy was the greatest player of all time.  I am now in Magnus's corner as the greatest.  He wins every tournament, he never loses, he gains rating points every tournament, and he is the highest rated player of all time!  Also, he is 22 I think. Wow!

I await the throngs of people who believe either Kasparov or Fischer was the greatest (good choices!).  By the way, Karpov is WAY WAY up there.

Enjoy the puzzle!

IMHO we can only compare players of their generation with each other; since the knowledge the newer generations gather is based on the previous generations analysis.  It's so difficult especially nowadays because  computers give an advantage previous generations could only dream of, but one nice thing is that computers and the internet have changed the way we, as chess players, live, work, play and learn for the better. chess.com being a prime example. Hope to see you in St. Louis someday!

agreed, although it would be interesting to see Carlsen meet Kasparov in his prime. In a world championship match say...

although magnus is truly amazing....lets not forget that he has way more recources then bobby fischer ever had...not to mention access to every game fischer ever played..magnus has over 2000 games committed to memory, which he uses to draw from during matches..who knows if hes ever made an original move... he has so many games memoeized it would be hard to tell..in my opinion, to be considered the greatest of all time, you need to use some inovation...imagine if fischer had access to computers and parents who fully support him, and a  way more advanced chess comunity.not to mention magnus had kasporov as a coach..also, fischer quit in his prime.at a time when he was vertually un beatable.who knows how high his rating would have gone.please excuse grammer and spelling mistakes im really tired.i think but am not sure, wasnt it morphy who played before there was really any indepth theory, thrived with nothing to draw from, played 20 simoltaneous blind fold matches, winning all of um...this is amazing considering there was no theory. meaning he really had to remember all the moves...when magus does it(still incredible im not taking away from magnus) he has theory to draw from , so keeping track is not as difficult..fischer will always be the greatest, based on the fact that he trained himself had only books to draw from but still barely a fraction of the theory magnus has to study... long story short you cant compare them , its apples and oranges..its like comparing babe ruth to barry bonds.. to different worlds magnus is the greatest of his time  bobby was the greatest of his and the next one to come along will seem better then magnus but we all know why...ive been playing now for a little over one year , but ive become completely obsorbed with the life of chesss... so   maybe my facts arent all right but it seems unfare to compare... you cant even compare, now im frustrated...magnus is a genious but where would he be without computers without great couching supportive parents..probably still on top but who knows..

    Really nice puzzle!!!

Everyday I learn some new trick at chess.com but I'm still the same average player with the same rating, therefore, I assume that everybody in chess.com are also learning new tricks everyday.

Capablanca was the greatest chess player of all time and Carlsen is starting to play like Capablanca because he knows that the secret to win games is to learn how to simplify the middle game into a slightly better endgame. Endgame knowledge is more important that opening theory and Carlsen is living prove of this fact.

Magnus has flown to another level on a rocket propelled pegasus.  I'd like to see him take the world championship.

Ahmed, if Anand is better than him in creativity then why is Magnus winning "drawn positions" game after game while Anand accepts draws before move 20?

    wtf_BobbyF

He is in third place in the all time greatest list in my opinion, behind Kasparov and Fisher like u said... but if he wins the WCC and defend it at least one time, then he will be the greatest without question... just my opinion of course
