Chessand "Common Courtesy'

I find it very difficult to understand why players cannot at least respond to an initial "hello/greeting" at the beginning of a match or "game" ! AFTER INITIAL GREETING if you do not want to converse, say or utter a single more word FINE,THEN DON'T!

I think "Common Courtesy"dictates...NO, in fact I think it DEMANDS an initial greeting , maybe even an exchange of first names within that first hello.

I don't feel this is asking to much from men or women playing a game considered to be a "Gentleman's" game. After all in the real life person vs.person matches they do it.

Let us NOT BECOME cold and callused just because we are on the net.

                                                Thx.for reading.......

                                                             Sincerely,Kenny

I have to agree, though I also have to admit I am sometimes guilty of this, due mainly to a negative feedback loop of sorts...

When I started playing chess (here), I used to say hello all the time, but so often no one responded. As a result, I stopped.

When people do say hello, I always say hello back (when I see it, sometimes I am on my iPhone and don't see it at the time). I have met some very nice and interesting people as a result.

I also think it is polite to say "good game" or something appropriate at the end of a game, but this seems to be even less well received.

I am playing FuMan80 (good guy) at the moment in 5 games (tournement overlap), and we have said hello to each other in every game, despite knowing we have already said it in the other games. It is just the polite thing to do.

Your post has inspired me to be try and be more active, instead of reactive.

Well said Mrcheckmate.  You're right.  There is no excuse for not at least introducing yourself.  It's not a generational thing, because through chat - I've made several friends from 12 years old to 86 years old.  So I guess it's more of 'lack of social skills' that we're looking at.

I've played over 500 games with people from all over the world, and while some of the english is less that great- everyone who has chatted back - chats in english and we've been able to share our languages with each other.  Ive learned about various cultures and countries, and that's pretty awesome.

Oh well, just wanted to vent originally.  Just like walking down the street, here at chess.com - you can meet nice people and you can meet anti-social people.  I'm thankful for the friendships I've made here and look forward to more.

For those of you who choose not to chat and those of you who go one step further and disable your chat box, that's your choice - I just think you're missing out on a lot of wonderful experiences you could have with people from around the world.
